Trey Macgregor won the September SPARKS Learner of the Month award – we caught up with him to find out what it means to win.

To enter, electrical students and apprentices must tag us in a photo of their work on social media and use #SPARKSLOTM. Our favourites (up to a maximum of eight) then go to a public vote at the end of the month before a winner is crowned. For full entry info, click here.

Trey, a Level 3 Electrotechnical Diploma student at Coventry College, was September’s winner after receiving the most public votes and won a 2773 series L-BOXX and merch from WAGO.

Trey, 19, said: “It feels great to win the award – a real confidence booster, and it feels great that tons of my friends and associates voted and supported me to win!”

The photo he submitted to the award showcased an extractor fan that he was fitting in some student accomodation.

He said he will use his prize on his next job “as well as being able to carry along the bragging rights!”

Trey’s ambition is to become fully qualified in the UK and eventually “in the US as well as Canada and maybe even Australia, and then hopefully getting some experience working around the world and building up as much knowledge as possible.”

He added: “Hopefully I’ll get to a point where I am able to work for myself and have contacts all over the world and be able to move from one country to another.”

His favourite thing about the industry? “How helpful people are. I’ve had the privilege to work with a few different sparks and they’ve all been patient and helpful with me to get me to the level I’m currently at. I believe that electrics is definitely the best trade to be in, because the whole future will be electric and the way forward.”

Congratulations, Trey! Entries are now open for the October award, with a great Knipex tool bundle on offer to the winner!
