Joe Dixon won the October SPARKS Learner of the Month award – we caught up with him to find out what it means to win.
To enter, electrical students and apprentices must tag us in a photo of their work on social media and use #SPARKSLOTM. Our favourites (up to a maximum of eight) then go to a public vote at the end of the month before a winner is crowned. For full entry info, click here.
Joe, a Level 2 Diploma Electrical Installation student at Bucks College Group, Aylesbury, was October’s winner after receiving the most public votes and won a electrical tool bundle from award sponsor Knipex.

All the votes have been checked and counted (it was close!) and we can reveal that @_sparky_joe is the SPARKS Learner of the Month for October! 🎉 Congratulations, please DM us to claim your @knipex_uk prize! As well as winning the prize, Joe will also feature in our Hall of Fame and in our next magazine ⭐ Remember, any electrical learners can enter November’s award and win a @dewalttoolsuk prize – tag us in a photo of your work with #SPARKSLOTM and this could be you next month.
Joe, 29, said: “It’s a real surprise to win the award, to be honest! There were a lot of great entries from people that have been working in electrics longer than me so I am thankful to everyone who voted. I am really pleased.
“My submission was a 3 socket radial circuit, simulating connection to a consumer unit, using Twin & CPC cable. It’s one of the first practical projects we have completed on our course and I did it in our first workshop session. I don’t have any trade work experience and have been doing a desk job for the last 10 years so this is a big change for me.
“Looking back at the photo I can already see how I can improve on my work so I know I am learning quickly and building my confidence.
Joe, who is studying part time while working two separate jobs, said the tools will be going straight into his tool bag. “I’ve been admiring the Knipex stuff online so I am delighted I will get to use them in the workshop. I am looking forward to working hard with them.”
Joe’s ambition is to complete his Level 3 Diploma next, before aiming to become a self-employed domestic electrician.
He added: “COVID presented an opportunity to re-train and I am looking forward to being my own boss one day.”
His favourite thing about the industry? “Its exciting getting to work with new technology and I would be proud to work to the high standards set by the regulations.
“I have always wanted to work in the industry and this award has confirmed I am doing the right thing by re-training. It’s never too late!”
