SPARKS runner-up Chris Davenport is living the dream as a Legoland animator

Chris Davenport had been made redundant from his apprenticeship just before finishing as runner-up in the 2019 SPARKS Apprentice of the Year competition.

Out of the seven finalists who competed last year, he was the only one who hadn’t got an apprenticeship.

At the final, in March 2019, Chris told us: “I’d love to be working at a theme park in five years – working on the rides, doing electrics and mixing it up.”

Chris, 23, performed superbly and came second in our national final and in April 2019, he decided to apply for a job as an Animator at Legoland Windsor – and managed to bag his dream job.

He has worked there since and is one of the stars of Channel 5’s current documentary, Inside Legoland.

Chris, who completed his Level 3 Electrical Installation qualification at Aldershot Construction College (Farnborough Collge of Technology), said: “I’d just been made redundant before the SPARKS final and on a pure fluke I saw the job advertised. I wasn’t sure if I had the qualifications but I applied, went for the interview and they absolutely loved me.

“You really can’t make it up that I managed to get my dream job.”

But what’s it like being on TV every weekend?

“I’ve seen myself do a couple of embarrassing things! My family found my head bobbing funny in the last episode,” said Chris.

“They filmed all around the park but the creative team which I’m part of is probably more interesting behind the scenes. My mates are chuffed that I’m on TV but have had a laugh at some of the things I’ve said and done.”

Chris said that entering the SPARKS Apprentice of the Year competition held him in good stead when going to the interview.

Chris won the South East regional heat and finished as overall runner-up in last year’s competition

He said: “I brought the competition up and they were very impressed that I came second in the UK. It’s really great to put your CV, regardless of where you finish in the competition. Plus I’ve still got my Schneider Electric toolbag I received as a prize from the competition, which is really handy.

“On a day-to-day, I tend to be fixing faults and wiring issues. Legoland has been around for around 20 years so a lot of the main wiring infrastructure in the more interactive places hasn’t really changed. It’s a lot of dealing with electrical issues in pits, trying to troubleshoot and repair animations around the park.”

Even during the lockdown, when Chris was furloughed, he still found time to practise his trade – by re-wiring his mum’s house.

Episode 3 of Inside Legoland is out this Sunday on Channel 5 at 8pm, but you can watch the first two episodes on My5 here.
