Thomas Seward, 18, from Coleg Gwent was crowned the overall winner of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition yesterday (Thursday 9th March).
Finalists from the seven regions where the competition heats took place plus the person with the highest overall score attended the Grand Final, which took place over two days at the 3M Customer Innovation Centre in Bracknell.
The standard of work was extremely high, making it a close call for all of the contestants, but there could only be one winner.
Thomas Seward astounded all attendees as he is a full time student and is yet to go out on the tools.
He took home £500 worth of Love To Shop vouchers, £200 worth of Screwfix vouchers, a Makita DAB sound system and two boxes full of goodies from Platinum sponsor Schneider Electric, who also gave his college a cheque for £1000 worth of Schneider Electric products.
As well as all of this, Thomas was given a Megger insulation tester and proving unit, screwdriver sets from Wera Tools and a £50 Amazon voucher from 3M.
Close behind him was Joseph Montgomery from Trafford College who came second, and Thomas Lewis from Cardiff and Vale College who took third place.
The 2017 SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year winner said: “I can’t describe how it feels to be a winner of a UK competition.
“I had butterflies when my name was announced because I just wasn’t expecting it. The main thing I’ll take away from the whole competition experience is that this proves that you should never doubt yourself.”
