ESC launches free safe isolation iPhone APP

Saturday, 12 May 2012 08:32

A ‘Safe Isolation’ app was this week unveiled by leading safety charity the Electrical Safety Council (ESC), aiming to tackle the dangerous practice of working on live electrical systems.

The ESC has based the Safe Isolation app on its Best Practice Guide No 2 (Guidance on theESC_logo management of electrical safety and safe isolation procedures for low voltage isolation). It is designed to be as easy to use as possible, taking a step-by-step approach to achieving safe isolation with a series of illustrations and simple instructions.

The app is available on iPhone and iPad and allows electrical engineers and electricians to access this important information while they are working and keep themselves and others safe.

Martyn Allen, the head of the ESC’s Technical Development Unit, said:

There is no excuse for inappropriate live working, or inadequate safety precautions. By routinely and invariably following a simple, step-by-step approach to safe isolation, you can prevent injuries and fatalities. The ESC’s Safe Isolation app has been developed to remind everyone working on, or near, electrical equipment how to work safely.”

There have been several prosecutions in recent years over breaches of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, highlighting the dangers of working when electrical systems are live. These problems could usually have been easily avoided by taking the time to work thoroughly through the safety precautions.

The app can be found at the App Store by searching for ‘safe isolation’ and then following the download instructions.

For more information visit the ESC’s website www.esc.org.uk where more information can be found on the Best Practice Guide No 2 and other best practice guides.

Second Queen’s Award For Super Rod!

Monday, 23 April 2012 10:20

Super Rod, the Blaenavon based manufacturer of installation tools for electricians, has just been awarded their second Queen’s Award in four years.

Following their award for Innovation in 2008, Super Rod has now been awarded one for International Trade in recognition of their success in exporting the Super Rod range all over the world.

MalcolmCommenting on the award, Managing Director, Malcolm Duncan said, "We have always known we have a great product but to see the response we get when we show our range in a country for the first time is amazing."

The last couple of years have been a challenge for the company as we’ve been faced with imitation products from the Far East, along with a forced factory move last year. Super Rod has further invested in a new design and production facility in Blaenavon, not far from its original site, to retain their excellent group of employees.

The future looks promising for Super Rod and Malcolm commented, "We hope our success and awards inspire other designers and inventors and shows that manufacturing is not dead in Wales. With great people around you anything can be achieved."
