The SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition kicked off earlier this month and with four incredibly talented finalists already lined up, the final promises to be the event of the year.

SPARKS Magazine has travelled to colleges in Newcastle, Burnley, Devon and Swansea so far in their quest to find this year’s winner.

Three more regional heats will take place throughout February before the Grand Final which will be held on 11th and 12th April at the 3M Customer Innovation Centre.

Here is the list of finalists so far:

North East – Tom Burdett, York College

North West – Kane Barker, Burnley College

South West – Luc Mathlin, DCET Training

Wales – Jay Popham, Gower College Swansea

There will be eight finalists in total attending the two-day final, which will consist of all seven regional heat winners and the highest overall scorer.

Alongside the prestige for both student and college of winning a UK competition, there’s a fantastic list of prizes up for grabs which have all been donated by well known industry names including Platinum sponsor Schneider Electric, Gold sponsor CEF, Silver sponsor Knipex and Bronze sponsors 3M and Hitachi.

The dates of the remaining heats are as follows:

Midlands – Stephenson College, Tuesday 13th February

South East – West Herts College, Thursday 15h February

Northern Ireland – Belfast Metropolitan College, Wednesday 28th February

Competition judge Darren Oates, External Quality Assurer at EAL, said: “The skill set we have seen so far already this year has been phenomenal and we’re looking forward to seeing what the next regions bring to the table. Well done to all of those who have competed so far, and good luck to those in the upcoming regional heats.”
