Stay tuned for the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2019 – and this year it will be bigger and better than ever

For nine years, SPARKS Magazine has travelled across seven regions of the UK on a quest to find the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year – and the search will soon begin again for 2019 for the 10th anniversary.

The finalists consist of the seven regional heat winners and the highest runner-up overall scorer, so there will be eight people participating in the final in total, which will take place at the 3M Customer Innovation Centre.

Last year’s contestants had a total of ten hours to complete the most difficult test the competition has ever seen to date.

It consisted of wiring, various conduit bends, a consumer unit, switches and bulbs which were all live tested at the end of the second day.

Prizes supplied by competition sponsors were worth a staggering £8,000 up for grabs.

Platinum sponsor Schneider Electric donated all of the materials for the bays, whilst BASEC provided all of the cable used throughout the competition, including all seven of the regional heats.

Amongst the many prizes donated by the competition’s sponsors, Schneider Electric gave away thousands of pounds worth of Schneider Electric products to Matt, Luc and their colleges.

Every entrant also took home lockout kits from gold sponsor CEF, drills from bronze sponsor Hitachi and 3M packs and Amazon vouchers from bronze sponsor 3M.

Last year’s winner, Matt Taylor, from Farnborough College of Technology, said: “I’m ecstatic – I just didn’t see myself winning. I entered to give myself a challenge and I’ve definitely achieved that.

“The other competitors were great and what I’ll take away from this is the knowledge that I can do something that I thought I couldn’t.”

If all of this has sparked your interest and you’d like to enter next year, keep an eye on our website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stay posted on how you can enter the competition. We’d love to see you there!
